as a kid there were a lot of things i vowed to never do to my children when i'm a parent. and some of them were completely unrealistic becos well, i was 10. and when i was denied new shoes or something ridiculous that i wanted, i swore i would give those things to my children when i become a parent. let's face it, those shits are expensive. and unless my child becomes a kid genius and finally invents the hoverboard, they'll have to earn and save up for the stuff they want.
but one thing i vowed to always give my kid when i decide to grow a human or take responsibility for one is making them feel comfortable talking to me. about anything and everything. i want them to have that connection with me becos i know a loss of that connection is critically damaging. it totally sucks when you can't talk to your own parents about an issue or aspiration you have. i don't want to be that parent who alienated their own child simply becos i don't feel comfortable talking to them. i don't want someone else handling their dreams, worries or insecurities. that's my responsibility you know?
they can hate me, for wanting to know who all their friends are, for making them give everybody in their homeroom class valentines day cards in elementary, for setting an "unreasonble" curfew. they can hate me, for making them rake leaves, shovel snow or helping out a family member to earn money toward something they want. they can hate me for that, haha. but they will never hate me for being able to talk to me. :)
